Even though you can find these in California, I had this one in China. They're also known as Pitahaya or Strawberry Pear and they taste quite delicious. They smell subtly fragrant, sweet like a pear, but tart maybe like a kiwi. You spoon out the flesh like a melon, but the texture is more like an over-ripe pear — sort of grainy — or like a limp radish. It's delicious but the hot pink, leathery outside makes me think that it wasn't meant to be eaten.

thanks. I saw these at the grocery store the other day but I wasn't sure how to eat it so I passed on buying it. Next time I'll give it a try.
1I saw it the other day too and I didn't even know what it was. Thanks for the tip, I'm always curious to eat new stuff
